Schüler*innen Helfen Leben (SHL) is the largest youth-led aid organisation in Germany with decades of experience working in (post-)conflict regions. It promotes and runs youth projects focussing on education, democracy and engagement. Once a year, SHL organises the Solidarity Action Day in Germany. On this day, around 60,000 pupils swap their classroom for a job and donate their wages to support sustainable projects in Southeast Europe and in the context of the Syrian conflict and the Russian war against Ukraine. In Lübeck we organise an extensive European youth exchange and encounter programme. This is primarily funded by Possehl Foundation. We also support youth initiatives across Europe in organising their own Solidarity Action Day. 

To support our team in the Lübeck office, we are looking for a committed colleague to join us immediately as Coordinator of European Network Activities & Public Relations. The position has a scope of 40 hours per week (part-time is possible with a minimum of 32 hours per week) and is initially limited until the end of 2025. An extension is desired. 

The position aims to position the interests and activities of SHL and its umbrella organization SAME uniquely and sustainably in the local and national public sphere. In addition to traditional press work, the tasks include organizing impactful public events as well as managing social media and website content. Furthermore, the position is responsible for our program on network development and expansion. The goal of this program is to convince other European youth organizations of the concept of the Solidarity Action Day, support them in independently organizing their own Solidarity Action Day, and ultimately welcome them as members into our European network. 

Key responsibilities in the area of public relations: 

  • Conceptualization and implementation of public events in Lübeck with the aim of anchoring European topics within the local community 
  • Building and maintaining networks with local partners 
  • Press and social media work related to the European activities of the Lübeck office, particularly to promote the offered programs both locally and Europe-wide 
  • Responsibility for the SAME website and parts of the SHL website 
  • Coordination of freelance staff, e.g., for the implementation of events 
  • Potential development of new projects, such as the networking of public relations efforts among various SAME member organizations 

Key responsibilities in the area of network development & expansion: 

  • Point of contact for other youth organizations across Europe interested in the Action Day concept, including providing consultation and ongoing communication 
  • Acquisition of new organizations, including on-site visits across Europe 
  • Networking at the European level, e.g., attending events and connecting with other umbrella organizations at national and international levels 
  • Conceptualizing, promoting, and conducting in-person seminars and webinars 
  • Coordination with freelance staff for corresponding events, as well as managing bookings and participant communication 

Profile: 

  • Enjoy working in NGOs and with young, volunteer-based, international structures 
  • Previous experience in organizing events and in public relations/social media work is desirable 
  • Experience in the field of (international) youth education is preferred, ideally including experience in organizing, leading, or moderating seminars 
  • Interest in European political topics and the European civil society 
  • Independent and structured work style 
  • Strong communication and presentation skills (both written and verbal), as well as the ability to explain complex topics in a clear and engaging manner 
  • Teamwork and intercultural sensitivity 
  • Willingness to travel occasionally within Germany and across Europe 
  • Excellent German and English language skills, with additional European language skills being an asset
